The Creative Writing Program at Kingsborough Community College, CUNY

October 3 2023 Creative Writing Committee Minutes

In attendance: Julie, John, Tauba, Eben, Rob, Maggie, Greg, Tom L., Lea, Jenn, Elroy, Joanna, and Brian

Concentration Update:

Our CW concentration proposal will be going in front of the College Curriculum Committee as part of a package of proposals to restructure Liberal Arts (aka, the Liberal Arts Academy). In order to align with Brooklyn College’s CW program, Screenwriting (60) WILL NOT be a required course. We will revisit this issue next year.

Clubs Update:

  • Greg would like to step away from leading the Poetry/Creative Writing Club (P/CWC). We are now looking for a club advisor.
  • We will reach out to Tony I. for an update on Antheon.
  • We will need to discuss strengthening the link between Antheon and P/CWC.

Spring Offerings (Related and Beyond):

  • Intro to CW (hybrid or async), Fiction (hybrid), Poetry (hybrid), and Screenwriting (async) – our spring ‘24 courses.
  • For fall ‘24: We will discuss which class to run as an in-person offering.
  • Brian and Eben will update the CW brochure to reflect the range of ‘24 classes.
  • Note: We have a CW presence on Academic Commons thanks to Elizabeth. Check it: https://creativekcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
  • Eben and Brian will be talking to Matthew about updating our KCC page.
  • CW will be advertised along with the new Liberal Arts Academy.

Who Teaches What:

  • Our colleagues who were hired to teach CW courses:
    • Tom L. and Eben (MFAs and PhDs both) are senior faculty CW instructors.
    • Joanna, John, Tony I., and Brian (MFAs all) were reclassified in part to teach CW courses according to their degrees and experience.
    • Amy (MFA and PhD) will be teaching CW courses when she returns from sabbatical.
  • Several of our part time and full time colleagues have MFAs and/or (CW-related) publication experience and WILL be folded into our course offerings when more classes are made available. This remains a priority!

Spring ‘24 CW Fair/Event:

  • Joanna, Jenn, John, and Tauba will help to organize the spring event.

Music Writing:

  • Joanna and Greg discussed their interests in adding a “music writing” component to our offerings. How this takes place (as a new course, as part of Nonfiction (58), or in some other adjacent structure) will be discussed further.

CW and Silver Awards Update:

  • With Greg’s guidance, we will be actively lobbying to build a significant cache of funds to support the CW awards in fiction (maybe change to “prose”?) and poetry. Stay tuned!
  • Note: We will be pursuing an inquiry as to how the funds were withdrawn in the first place, via the provost and/or the Awards Committee. It’s important that we pursue this question of administration accountability, which is a crucial touch-point of shared governance.
  • Audrey now guides the Silver Poetry Award and Amy, Tom, and Brian (and John?) continue to serve as readers. Funding for the award is in question. More info to follow.
