MEET OUR FACULTY


GREGORY BRUNO
Poetry, Introduction to Creative Writing

Dr. Gregory Bruno is Assistant Professor in English at Kingsborough Community College where he teaches first year and creative writing. He designs and teaches co-enrolled writing courses at correctional facilities in the greater New York City area. His work on class, debt, and higher education in prison has been featured in Radical Teacher and Journal of Basic Writing and the books, Reinventing Pedagogy of the Oppressed: Contemporary Critical Perspectives and Dialogicality: Personal, Local, and Planetary Dialogue in Education, Health, Citizenship, and Research. He is the author of Theory and Practice for Literacy in the Prison Classroom: An Inquiry Approach for Students and Educators. His poetry has been published by Local Gems, and he has written many reviews of art, literature, and music.


ROBERT COWAN
Poetry

Robert Cowan combines poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction in his work. He is the author of Elsewhen: Pieces (2019) and Close Apart: Poems (2018), both published by Paloma Press. A Pushcart Prize nominee, his work has appeared in Bayou, Entropy, Flatbush Review, Green Spot Blue, MiGoZine, Here Comes Everyone, Mayday, Pioneertown, Skidrow Penthouse, Word Riot, and the anthology Humanity, the proceeds of which went to UNICEF. He is also the author of three books of criticism.


MAGGIE HILL
Creative Writing-Fiction

Maggie Hill teaches Creative Writing-Fiction, as well as literature and composition courses at Kingsborough. Her essays and non-fiction have been published in The New York Times, The New York Daily News, and Scholastic professional magazines. Current publications include Lakeshore Literary Review, Cleaver Lit Mag, Embark Literary, Persimmon Tree. She has been the recipient of several artist fellowships and residences, including Yaddo, Ragdale, and Prospect Street. HOOPS, a coming-of-age novel about basketball, is scheduled for publication in Spring 2024.

BRIAN KATZ
Introduction to Creative Writing, Poetry, Screenwriting

Brian Philip Katz earned his MFA in Poetry at Columbia University and conducted a year of postgraduate research in Creative Writing at Newcastle University, UK. Brian’s poetry, short stories, and essays have appeared in many publications including Hayden’s Ferry Review, Union Station, Identity Theory, Red River Review, and the NY Press. He is the writer of the graphic novels, Neutron Girl and Neutron Woman; and he is the writer/director of the feature film Roman Buildings (2014). 


JOHN KELLER
Fiction, Screenwriting

John M. Keller began his writing career as a journalist, before turning to fiction and film. In 2012, his story collection, A Bald Man With No Hair, was published, followed by novels Know Your Baker; The Box and the Briefcase, the Moleque and the Old Man and the First Coming of the Second Son of God; Abracadabrantesque and Johnny Allan. His work is set around the world, especially Latin America (Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay…); a forthcoming trilogy of novels, She Was Already Dead, takes place in Sicily, India, Uzbekistan and Japan. After writing multiple screenplays, he wrote and directed the film “Trop c’est trop” (“I’ve Had Enough!”), set in the French Pyrenees and starring Eléa Clair and Julien Jacob, and “The White Stuff,” set in Brooklyn and starring Jonathan Duran, Morin Golan, Carey Harrison, Zach Grenier, Majah Hype, Danny Bolero and Thais Sobreira. His latest short film, co-directed with Giorgio Arcelli Fontana, stars Academy Award winner James Ivory (Remains of the Day, Howard’s End, Call Me By Your Name). He has also taught writing at St. Xavier’s College in India, the Universidad de las Américas in Mexico and the Universidad de Montevideo in Uruguay.

JOANNA STEIN
Introduction to Creative Writing, Nonfiction

Joanna McNaney Stein is a music writer and essayist whose work has appeared in Short Takes: Brief Encounters with Contemporary Nonfiction, PopMatters, Bust, LGBTQ Nation, The Brooklyn Rail, and the satirical Hard Times. Her forthcoming book on k.d. lang’s Ingénue be published by Bloomsbury for their 33 1/3 series of books in January 2023.
